Master’s Thesis at the College of Education for Humanities Discusses Verses Related to Theology in the Section “The Time of Their Account Has Drawn Near for the People”: A Doctrinal Study

A Master’s thesis was defended at the College of Education for Humanities, Department of Quranic Sciences and Islamic Education, at University of Tikrit on Wednesday (April 29, 2026), by the student Imad Khalaf Khudhair Al-Sabawi. The thesis was entitled:
“Verses Related to Theology in the Section ‘The Time of Their Account Has Drawn Near for the People’: A Doctrinal Study.”

The thesis presents a thematic study of the issues of the Oneness of Divinity (Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah) and the Oneness of the Divine Names and Attributes (Tawhid al-Asma’ wa al-Sifat) as addressed in the verses of the Qur’anic section “Iqtaraba lil-nasi hisabuhum” (The time of people’s reckoning has drawn near). This Meccan section focuses on establishing the foundations of Islamic creed and correcting doctrinal deviations that emerged among earlier communities, particularly polytheism in worship and misconceptions regarding the attributes of God.

The study aims to highlight the Qur’anic methodology in affirming monotheism and to demonstrate its diverse approaches in calling for sincere devotion to Allah alone, affirming His absolute perfection through His Most Beautiful Names and Sublime Attributes, while negating any partners and declaring His transcendence above any resemblance to His creation. It also explores the close relationship between the Oneness of Divinity and the Oneness of the Names and Attributes, and the impact of this relationship on building sound faith and guiding individual and social behavior.

The study reached several key findings, including:

  1. The selected Qur’anic section presents a clear and comprehensive exposition of monotheism by affirming that Allah alone is worthy of worship and by refuting all forms of apparent and hidden polytheism.
  2. The verses emphasize the doctrine of the Divine Names and Attributes according to the Qur’anic approach, which affirms them without anthropomorphism and declares transcendence without negation, thereby reinforcing correct belief.
  3. The Qur’an in this section demonstrates the strong interconnection between the Oneness of Divinity and the Oneness of the Names and Attributes, as knowledge of Allah’s Names and Attributes leads to sincere devotion to Him alone.
